How SailRank Ratings Are Calculated
You may be wondering how these ratings are calculated and for good reason, sailing is a complex sport and it is difficult to quantify the skill of a sailor with a single number (so complex that technically we have 16 numbers that quantify a sailor's skill: 2 for each of the 8 categories). SailRank uses a modified version of the Elo Rating System to calculate ratings. The Elo Rating System was originally developed for Chess and has since been adapted for many other sports. The variant of the Elo Rating System used by SailRank is called the Plackett Luce Rating System. The exact model implementation that SailRank uses is from OpenSkill. These ratings are adjusted at the end of each week using a custom version of PageRank to compensate for conference differences. Soon the codebase from SailRank will be open sourced and available on GitHub for those more interested in the details.
Rating List Criteria
While all of the following criteria are subject to change as the SailRank Rating System evolves, the following explains the list of the criteria that SailRank uses to determine which sailors are included in the rating list. Sailors must have a minimum of 60 (30 for TR) comparisons against out of conference sailors, this was implemented to combat the inflation of ratings for certain conferences where sailors did not compete against diverse groups of opponents. Additionally, following the second week of full competition in the Fall season, sailors must sail at least one race in a category during the current competition year to be eligible for the ratings lists in that category. SailRank will continue to monitor the rating list and adjust the criteria as necessary. SailRank has also chosen to exclude any ratings that are negative as we do not want to encourage any form of harrasment based on these lists.
